How Glass Pipes and Other Smoking Devices Cool Down Smoke

Most old-fashioned bongs and glass pipes haven’t changed much, in that they are still pretty old-school in their offerings. They aren’t available with many of the ‘gimmicky’ add-ons that many modern bongs come with today, such as percolators, diffusers, or pre-coolers.

While these traditional water pipes are more reasonably priced and are quite popular with purists, they fail to offer many functional benefits, such as a very basic one like cooling down the smoke before one inhales. For this, smokers must turn to a few embellishments that get the job done. Here are a few of the most popular (and some very unique) ways to cool down smoke.

Ice bongs

One of the simplest ways to cool down smoke is by using a bong that has an ice catcher. These are installed just below the mouth piece of the bong, which can then be filled with ice cubes. Inhaling smoke through these devices not only works to cool the smoke down itself, but also offers a totally refreshing experience. Remember, the size of the ice cubes that you put in the bong needs to fit perfectly in there. You will need to remove the cubes from the bong after you’re done smoking, especially if you are using a pipe with a shot hole, so that there isn’t a flood when the ice melts.

Pre-coolers are actually decently effective in cooling down smoke when mounted between the chillum and bowl. This is a fairly simple process to reconstruct – a second water tank is placed before the chillum which has a separate ash catcher or dish and works by expanding the load of the water.

Honeycomb-PercolatorPercolators disperse heat in liquid by forcing smoke to travel down through water. This is a fairly basic manner of cooling hot smoke. There are different types of percolators such as inline, honeycomb or showerheads. These split the smoke through slits, thereby forcing more smoke to be diffused through the filter and the water.

downstems Another option is to use downstems which have a closed bottom portion to allow the smoke to whirl and cool. This permits the smoke to be refreshed with oxygen, thereby reducing the itchy feeling you get in your throat, which ultimately leads to a coughing fit. Although different variations of downstems are available on the market, they all basically serve the same function in increasing the airflow of your glass bong or dab rig during inhalation.
